Time Flies

THE BRIEF

Our brief was to design, program and make an interactive lighting product or installation. This was a university group project where I worked in a pair with Rachel Brown.

CONTEXT

Our project began with brainstorming lights inspired by nature, like lava lamps and firefly jars. We wanted to create engaging lights that would appeal to children. Recognising the challenges of focusing on tasks in today's digital age, particularly during lockdown, we aimed to design lights that could inspire short bursts of focused work. This idea stemmed from our experiences tutoring younger siblings, where we observed the struggle many children face in staying focused amidst distractions

THE PROCESS

We based our design and user journey around the Pomodoro Technique aiming to enhance children's focus and concentration while making the experience appealing and interactive. Inspired by the Pomodoro Technique, we coded NeoPixel rings for our lights so that each ring represented 5-minute intervals within the 25-minute focus time. The lights were programmed to change colour after another 5 minutes, with all lights eventually turning white after the 25 minute focus time to signify the 5-minute break period. Drawing inspiration from firefly jars, we used various glassblowing techniques to mimic the flickering effect of fireflies. We experimented with a pin cushion technique to create indents in the glass, as well as, poking the glass with screws during the blowing process. For the bases, we laser-cut wooden pieces and circular bases connected by wire covers.

THE RESULT

Our final prototype enhances children's focus using the Pomodoro Technique, inspired by firefly jars. Glass domes with NeoPixel rings atop wooden bases represent 5-minute intervals within a 25-minute focus period, transitioning colors for breaks. Initially, we used red tones but changed to warm white based on user feedback to minimise distraction. Our design fosters concentration in a calming yet engaging atmosphere. Colour changes from blue to red signify focus and relaxation periods, with adjusted flickering intensity.  Prototyping and user testing ensured our piece effectively aids children's focus while maintaining appeal.
